- DayStar Digital, currently the only third-party developer to offer a CPU
- accelerator for the Macintosh IIcx, has reduced the overall cost of its
- PowerCard 030 accelerator board by slashing the IIcx socket installation price
- from $249 to $49.
-
- DayStar accelerators are normally installed in the CPU socket on the Macintosh
- motherboard. In the IIcx, however, Apple attached the CPU chip directly to the
- motherboard, eliminating the CPU socket. To overcome this situation, DayStar
- has designed a process and equipment to install a socket on the IIcx
- motherboard. This process lets users enhance the speed and performance of
- their IIcx computers, without using one of their valuable NuBus slots.
-
- “Our competitors have declined to offer acceleration solutions to Macintosh
- IIcx users because of the installation problem,” said Andrew Lewis, president
- of DayStar Digital. “We chose to deal with the problem, found considerable
- demand, and because of the large number of sockets we're installing, we've been
- able to reduce costs and pass the savings on to the customer.”
-
- To have a socket installed, end users and resellers simply send the motherboard
- or the complete Macintosh IIcx box to DayStar. Sockets are installed within 48
- hours, and DayStar will pay for return shipment to the customer. As always,
- DayStar offers a 30-day workmanship guarantee on all socketed motherboards.
-
-
- DayStar Products Include:
-
- • PowerCache IIci, a 40 or 50 MHz 68030 cache card that plugs into the cache
- connector slot and can double the performance of the Macintosh IIci.
-
- • PowerCard 030, the best-selling line of high-speed (25 to 50 MHz)
- accelerators for the Mac II, IIx and IIcx. The PowerCard 030 provides a fast
- 68030 CPU, a 32K cache, and the option to add a high-speed math chip.
-
- • Fast Cache IIci, the first cache memory card for the Mac IIci. FastCache
- plugs into the cache connector slot on the Macintosh IIci to boost the
- processing speed from 20 to 70 percent.
-
- • SCSI PowerCard, a computer on a NuBus card that boosts performance of
- optical, SyQuest and all standard hard drives.
-
- • LT200 Connection, LocalTalk Interface boards for the PC, PS/2 Micro Channel,
- and compatibles. The LT200 allows DOS or Windows® users to connect into
- AppleTalk network systems. Users can share network devices such as laser
- printers, use electronic mail, or connect to file servers via AppleShare,
- Novell NetWare, TOPS, or 3Com 3+Open.
